Many
A) Rule: Many is used with plural count nouns. These words almost always end in “s,” so they are easy for students to spot.
B) Positive Statements: With positive statements, the meaning of many is “a lot, a big amount.”
Examples:
- She has many friends.
- There are many problems to solve before we can go home.
C) Negative Statements: With negative statements, the meaning of not many is “a few, a small amount.”
Examples:
- He doesn’t have many courses this semester.
- There aren’t many ways to use this software.
D) Questions: With questions, many is used to ask about the amount when the amount is unknown.
Examples:
- How many cars do they own?
- Are there many ways to say “thank you” in your language?
E) Exceptions: Point out that there are a few well-known exceptions where a plural count noun doesn’t end in “s”:
Examples:
- We have many children.
- There weren’t many people at the ceremony.
